Clean bikes protect ancient kauri

April 21, 2026

The Hunua Ranges Regional Park is home to the largest remaining population of kauri in Aotearoa still free from kauri dieback and we want to keep it that way.

We love people coming here. Riding here. Experiencing this place. But sadly, despite some really good attempts, cyclists aren’t meeting the mark of best practice when it comes to cleaning their gear at hygiene stations.

That’s why we’ve released a new instructional video, which sets out the gold standard for kauri hygiene on the bike trail.

Stop. Scrub. Spray. Repeat.

Auckland Council Plant Pathogen Advisor Zacc Forbes-Smith takes you step by step through what to do before you ride, and at every hygiene station along the route: Watch on Facebook

→  Arrive with a clean bike and clean camping gear

→  At every hygiene station: mount your bike, get both wheels off the ground

→  Scrub tyres, pedals and frame

→  Spray everything with Sterigene

→  Repeat for your shoes and any gear that’s touched the soil

These kauri have been here for centuries. With a few careful minutes, we can make sure they’re still here for the next riders too.

Thanks for doing the mahi.
