Loop Rides

If you’re a confident on-road rider, you can mix the Hūnua Traverse with open road riding and create a series of loop rides that begin and end in Clevedon.

WARNING: Open-road loops are suited to experienced riders only

Hūnua Traverse – Ness Valley loop

28km, 630m elevation

From Clevedon, you can turn the northern-most section of the Hūnua Traverse into a 28km loop by connecting via Ness Valley.
This route can be ridden in either direction, but we reckon it’s hard to beat the descent into Clevedon via Otau Mountain Road. The cold beers and hot chips waiting at Hallertau Clevedon are a sweet reward.

SAFETY ALERT

This route is suited to experienced riders only

Clevedon-Kawakawa Rd is a high traffic environment with traffic speeds of 80km/hr and very narrow road shoulders. Otau Mountain Road is used by logging trucks during weekdays. We recommend this route on weekends an public holidays only.

Hūnua Traverse – Hūnua Village loop

50km, 1150m elevation

From Clevedon, you can turn the northern-most section of the Hūnua Traverse into a 50km loop by exiting the Regional Park at Moumoukai Road and returning to Clevedon on open roads. Note – you can add in the Valley Loop ride (access from A R A Road) for an additional 7km and 185m elevation.

SAFETY ALERT

This route is suited to experienced riders only, comfortable riding on open roads with narrow shoulders.

Tour de Ranges loop

90km, 1650 elevation

Use the Hūnua Traverse as the first half of the infamous Tour de Ranges loop, returning along the stunning coastal roads of the Seabird Coast and Kawakawa Bay. This route can be cycled in either direction – we prefer taking on the hills of the Hūnua Traverse while our legs are fresh, but we recommend checking the wind direction before you set off.
